Ok, there really doesn't need to be an article on women's dresses of the civil war era on a scholarly web site. But the working attire of the ladies in "How To Paper" (1872) made a profound impression on me. Let me just pose the question, could YOU could stand on the tippy-top of a seven-foot ladder in flat heels and full skirts and match a piece of paper? I thought so. So naturally, when I came across this fashion tidbit about Dress Elevators while paging through some of my earlier copies of the American Agriculturist, I just knew it had to go in.
